There are some technologies that have remained fundamentally the same for decades. The traditional PSTN system is one of them. Despite incremental improvements regarding networks and the mode of handling telephone calls, the basics haven't changed. The call quality has remained flat for a very long time. Moreover, older models of working have stagnated as well. Despite a small improvement in factors such as telephone number portability, people are as shackled to their devices as they ever were even though those devices themselves have changed drastically in form and function.

The emergence of the Internet has created an alternative network that we are only now realizing how to leverage in order to shake up the stagnant PSTN model. Even though there are many who feel that the call quality of VoIP is inferior to that of the PSTN phone system, such a notion is outdated and new and improved audio codecs that use up less space than ever before coupled with the increasing availability and reliability of Internet connections have led to the emergence of what we now call HD voice - something that has to be experienced firsthand in order to fully appreciate.

Certain limitations of the traditional telephone system have become so ingrained into our consciousness that we no longer pay any attention to them and accept them as a matter of fact. Take for example the problems with distinguishing certain fricative constants such as P, B, D and T. This difficulty has become so entrenched in our culture that we have developed an entire language subset to deal with it. Phrases such as "a for Apple" and "B for Bob" come to us now almost without thinking. Such efforts will not be necessary if you are using an HD voice codec that retains more of the higher and lower frequencies of the voice spectrum during transmission.

The benefits don't end there. During conference calls, one of the difficulties is distinguishing the voice of one person from another. With the traditional telephone codecs, this isn't a trivial matter. HD voice captures far more of the individual characteristics of each person and makes conference calling a breeze. Couple this with the fact that everyone on the conference can be connected to each other for free using VoIP, and you have an unbeatable solution that businesses cannot afford to ignore.
